Issue 1 available now

Issue 1 coverWe’re very pleased to announce that Capricious Issue 1 is now available for free download. Featuring work from A.J. Fitzwater, Sean Monaghan, Sabrina Amaya Hoke and Bogi Takács, this issue takes you through fairy tales and to other worlds in none of the ways you’d expect. The authors challenge and interrogate genre boundaries, exploring themes of consent, communication, and obligation. Their work is filled with the senses of exploration, danger, and ultimate success that characterise so much of the best speculative fiction.

We really hope you enjoy reading – and if you like what you see please consider subscribing. For just US$8 we will send you copies of the next four issues direct to your inbox. Subscriptions not only help us keep publishing, but also give us a chance of making some of our (many, many) dreams for the future of Capricious a reality. If you’re unable to subscribe, don’t worry – all stories and articles from future issues will be archived and freely available on our website from three months after publication. Reviewing stories, recommending Capricious to friends, and submitting your work are other ways of supporting us which are much appreciated.

Thank you for your support and enjoy your reading!

We’re open for submissions!

After a bit of hedgehog-wrangling, help from some kind people, and a lot of poking at WordPress, we’re pleased to announce that Capricious is open for submissions. We’re looking for literary and experimental speculative fiction, and related non-fiction, and we’d love to hear from you. Take a look at our submissions guidelines and do pass the word on to anyone else who may be interested.

Thanks to a generous grant from SpecFicNZ we’re able to ensure that issues 2 – 5 will all have at least one work by a writer from or in New Zealand, or an article about a New Zealand writer or writers. This gives us a great opportunity to showcase New Zealand writing alongside speculative fiction from all over the world.

Meanwhile the first issue of Capricious is coming together nicely. Sign up to our mailing list or keep an eye on our Facebook page and Twitter account for more. The first issue will be available for free, and then we’ll be opening up a subscription option for future issues.

Thank you to all of you for your support. We’re looking forward to seeing what the future holds for Capricious.
